Hello my hygge friends! As I was gazing into the red rays of the morning sun trying to ignore my tumbling toddler while sipping coffee and pretending to ground and stretch my weary bones....I was hit by a sudden realization. For the first time in 20 years, I am not going back to school. Yet, somehow my life in the last week has been more crazy busy and I have this sense of urgency. Now being a stay at home mom and not having to go back to school, I realized the sense of urgency is not from the end of summer vacation, but the changing of seasons. Our bodies sense a change, a shift in mother nature preparing to frost over, and the change happens to coincide with the beginning of school.
So, what have I gleaned from this sudden realization and deamed worthy to share with all of my hygge friends....Life is about change and becoming and instead of stressing our bodies and not enjoying it, we must embrace it! We must hygge! Now you may be asking yourself: "Bernadette, you may not be going to school, but I am", "Now, Bern just cus you are staying at home sipping coffee in the morning sun doesn't mean the rest of the population can." Well, you are right to ask yourselves these questions. But! I remain firm and rebuttle. You MUST hygge. Hygge or insanity. That's my back to school slogan. (yes, I know I am not going back to school.)
Even though I may not be packing my backpack and skipping off to the school door, I will dare to give you a few tips to help hygge into Fall and the new school year. First: smile more! When you smile instead of having a permant stress grimace you can release happy hormones and this! this is very hygge. So risk the danger of looking a little off and just smile.
Second: Even though you are busy, find a few moments to hygge. This can be hard but a little bit of intention goes a long way. You can smell the cool breeze on your way into school. Take a moment to appreciate the clean empty room before children come clamoring in. Pause to appreciate your hard work of preparation and give yourself grace and smile at all the things you still need to do.
Third (because there always is a third): Remember you are human. Every transition period does not happen perfectly, but nonetheless it happens. Hygge your way through the little hiccups, write down anything that stresses you out, and make a promise to yourself that you will enjoy this beautiful change. Enjoy before you find yourself wondering where the time has gone and somehow you begin to miss the crazy back-to-school season.
